Tang Soo Do is an excellent martial art for children and young people. At Ely & Witchford Tang Soo Do, we welcome children aged 7 to 15 and provide a structured, safe, and enjoyable environment where they can develop skills that will benefit them far beyond the training floor.
Why Tang Soo Do Is Great for Children
Tang Soo Do teaches far more than kicks and punches. For children, the real value lies in the personal development that comes with regular training.
- Confidence and self-belief — progressing through the grading system gives children clear evidence of what they can achieve through hard work
- Discipline and respect — the traditional etiquette of Tang Soo Do encourages respectful behaviour towards instructors and fellow students
- Focus and concentration — learning patterns, techniques and combinations challenges the mind as much as the body
- Physical fitness — classes are energetic and fun, building strength, flexibility, coordination and stamina
- Resilience — children learn to persist through challenges and to treat setbacks as opportunities to improve
- Friendships — our classes bring together children of different ages and schools in a positive, team-oriented environment
Safe, Qualified Instruction
All of our instructors are DBS checked and trained in safeguarding and child protection. Our senior instructor, Master Gaynor Russell, is the lead safeguarding and child protection officer for the Great Britain Tang Soo Do Association (GBTSDA). You can be confident that your child is training in a safe, well-supervised environment.
What Happens in a Class
Children train alongside each other in classes that mix ages and grades. Beginners are made to feel welcome immediately, and more experienced students are encouraged to support newer ones — a tradition that builds leadership skills as well as community spirit.
Classes include warm-up exercises, fundamental techniques, patterns (hyungs), and partner work. Everything is taught at a pace suited to each child’s ability. The grading system — from white belt through to black belt — provides a structured pathway with achievable milestones.
