Tang Soo Do is a traditional Korean martial art that offers adult students a rich combination of physical fitness, mental discipline, practical self-defence and a welcoming community. At Ely & Witchford Tang Soo Do, adults of all fitness levels train alongside each other — from complete beginners to experienced practitioners.
Why Adults Choose Tang Soo Do
Many of our adult students come to Tang Soo Do having never trained in a martial art before. Tang Soo Do is particularly well suited to adults because training develops not just physical ability but also mental focus, patience, and self-confidence — qualities that carry over into everyday life.
Benefits our adult students regularly report include:
- Improved fitness — classes provide a full-body workout combining cardiovascular exercise with strength and flexibility training
- Practical self-defence — learn effective techniques grounded in a centuries-old tradition
- Mental discipline and focus — the structured nature of Tang Soo Do training sharpens concentration and builds resilience
- Stress relief — training gives you a genuine break from the demands of daily life
- Community — train with a friendly and supportive group of like-minded people of all ages and backgrounds
- Progression and achievement — a clear grading system means there is always a tangible goal to work towards
What to Expect in Class
Classes follow a traditional structure and are taught by qualified, experienced instructors who are all members of the Great Britain Tang Soo Do Association (GBTSDA). You do not need to be fit to start — the training itself will build your fitness over time. Classes are open to adults aged 16 and over, with no upper age limit.
A typical class includes warm-up and stretching, basic techniques (kicks, punches, blocks and stances), patterns (hyungs), and partner work. As you progress through the grades you will also work on sparring and self-defence applications.
